In the opening CNN clip with Aslan, we saw him describe Bill Maher’s understanding of religion as unsophisticated. Give three examples of how YOUR understanding of Islam has become more sophisticated as a result of this module? If you took the optional quiz at that the start of this module about your knowledge of Islam (Links to an external site.), try taking it again (just for fun). How did you do?

Readings: Huston Smith, The World’s Religions, Chapter Six, Social Teachings, pp.248-257
Chapter 3, No God But God by Reza Aslan [This reading is great for learning more about the history of attitudes to women in Islam, and issues with interpreting the Quran.]
Choose one of the five social teachings that Smith mentions in the reading. Summarize his points about it, then from The World’s Wisdom, find an example from both the Qur’an and the Hadith that seems to either support or contradict his points. Don’t forget to give the page numbers for the quotations you use.
Part 3: 100 words.
The topic is about Social issue: Taoism- social justice.
1. Start your research on your topic, using this list of resources as a starting point. Find a digital text or object – like a blog post, short article, short video (no more than 15 mins), charts of data etc. about your chosen topic and post it in the relevant section in this topic. Provide a few sentences explaining what it’s about and why you enjoyed it or find it relevant. Make sure you put your name by ‘your’ object. Also make sure you give a reference (the link) to the object.
