Creative Response – Written Explanation
‘No Sugar’ by Jack Davis, Unit 1

What is the ‘gap’ you have chosen to explore – explain the context of your piece? Locate where your piece fits in with the original play and explain why you have chosen this point in time to write your ‘crack in the narrative’ (i.e. what did you want your piece to add/develop/reveal about the setting and social/cultural attitudes of the time?). Also, who is the target audience for your piece – why?

Whose perspective did you write from? How did Davis portray this character? Which of these key ideas did you want to convey about this character, and WHY? (Remember – your piece should realistically convey the ideas/beliefs/attitudes/actions of one key character, but your writing should obviously also include references to other characters) .
Also, what structure/form did you choose to write in? Why was this a suitable form to choose for your character’s PoV? (ie. What did it enable you to focus on or reveal about your key character?)

Which key concerns (themes/ideas) did you focus on and develop from the original play? WHY?
(ie, what is the purpose/aims/intention for your piece of writing?). Be really specific about how and where your piece demonstrates these – give brief quotes from your piece.
eg, My intention was to explore the character of Neville in ‘No Sugar’, as he is an authority figure and antagonist in this play. The purpose of my piece was to explore Neville’s viewpoint and therefore reveal Davis’s key concern of racist white attitudes towards the indigenous community, and the white justification for this ‘protection’. This was revealed when I had Neville comment “………..” I wanted to portray Neville as…..

Which stylistic devices from the original play (ie, stage directions, type of language, symbols, motifs, structure of the play, the use of literary references, specific character voice/tone, etc…) did you attempt to use in YOUR writing? Be as detailed as possible –provide examples/quotes from your own piece that demonstrate their use, and explain why you use these. Ie. what were you aiming to add to the ‘meaning’ of your piece? or impressions you were intending to convey? using these devices.
Eg. To create a realistic response for Frank, I used the colloquial language that Davis employs for him in the play, such as “……….” This is to show that Frank was…….. I also incorporated the symbol of ……. as this implies Frank feels/believes…….
