How do these movies look through a feminist lens? You choose the angle you wish to take, but I’d like to see LOTS of relevant vocabulary from “Engaging Cinema: An Introduction to Film Studies” by Bill Nichols and LOTS of specific analysis (details!) of the film.
1. In terms of looking relations (and Laura Mulvey’s discussion of the “gaze”) are there any particular shots in which the female character is objectified? Does the camera ask us to identify with her or treat her as an object?
2. Does the main female character (Rosemary, Frances, The Bride, Ava) challenge stereotypical representations of women? In what ways do they reject archetypes (such as the virgin or the femme fatale)? Do they fit the mold of these archetypes at all?
3. Do you note any conflict between mobility and domesticity? Does the main female character explore any alternatives to domesticity? Is escape an important part of her narrative?
4. To what extent is she governed by patriarchal (masculine) rules and standards? In what ways might she offer a challenge to the patriarchy?
5. To what extent are female-female relationships important for the social organization of the character’s world? Is there a significant relationship she shares with another woman? Or is there a lack of “female subjectivity” (423)?
