Assignment Paper

I’ve given you three videos to watch this week all with people who are considered advocates. I’ve chosen these because I feel they are all in one way or another related to many of the problems we address in our CPs and examples of grassroots advocates.
Assignment:
Please after watching all three videos write a brief response–150 words. Then, choose one person and do a quick 10 min google search about one of the advocates featured and write 250 words on what problems they were addressing, who the person is, how they got involved, what they fought for, successes won, etc.
This might have meant a monumental change in legislation or a change in how things are run locally or community involvement.
Pedagogical purpose: This assignment will help prepare you and is a warm-up for thinking about your own AP projects.

Extra, extra:
To those of you talking about abortion (and really all of you might enjoy seeing an excellent, over the top Hollywood take on how grassroots looks in action) who have a HULU account (or an ex’s password, JUST KIDDING)–I cannot recommend the series Mrs. America enough. I think the actresses playing Phyllis Schlafly Pro Life candidate and anti Equal Rights Amendment, and Gloria Steinem anti-abortion advocate and renowned journalist (https://www.womenshistory.org/education-resources/biographies/gloria-steinem (Links to an external site.)) on the left, are superb. The show might get some historical bits wrong or take a lot of film industry liberties, but it does get right the very thing we aimed at explicating in our CPs –to see how language is so deeply embedded in what is considered a social problem (or is not), and how change can be called for by redefining the terms, or how people will resist someone’s cause if it’s couched in the wrong rhetoric.
