project four: city map
You may work in pairs, teams, or as individuals to complete your research and your work with a community partner organization. Each individual student must turn in their own written work. For this project, you are required to work with a community partner whose mission closely aligns to your research project.
Pre-project phase
Choose a city problem and select a community partner organization that works to solve that problem. Begin your service work before developing a research plan (see iLearn).
Developing a research plan (see sample on iLearn)
Phase 1: Research question
Develop a research question (or more than one) that could be answered through mapping
Bring your ideas for class discussion and instructor approval.
Phase 2: Data
List data you will need to collect to answer this question. This may include locations, numbers, types of actions, etc. See sample research plan on iLearn.
Phase 3: Resources
List resources that could provide data to answer your question (organizations, news accounts, books and articles, websites, etc. Be sure to include relevant course texts.)
Phase 4: Field research
Visit the city sites that can provide answers to your question and record your data.
Phase 5: Map
Create a physical map to present your data. Make sure it is large enough to be clearly seen by everyone in the class during your presentation.
Phase 6: Summary Sheet and Findings (see example and style sheet on iLearn).
a) Create a one-page Summary Sheet (write as list) presenting your:
Research question
Data collected
Resources used
Community partner information (see example on iLearn).
b) Write a one-page explanation of your findings (write as essay)
What did you learn?
What challenges did you face?
Evaluate how well your map provides an answer to your question.
Evaluate how you supported the mission of your community partner.
c) Combine both pages in a single document and submit via TurnItIn.
