Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Assignment

Examine the approach of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). After reading in the text about its philosophical assumptions, its processes, and its founders you’ll have an understanding that the goal of CBT is to disrupt the cycle of negative thoughts, negative emotions, and negative behaviors by training a person to tune-in to the self-talk and challenging it.

Take a look at the PDF document called “Socratic Questioning”. These are the types of questions a CBT therapist might train their clients/patients to ask themselves when experiencing feelings of anxiety or depression.

Assignment: Write 3 paragraphs (see below).

Paragraph One: Describe the techniques and philosophical approach of CBT to treating disorders.

Paragraph Two: Assume the role of a person who is being trained to use the techniques of CBT to address their anxiety. Describe the types of negative self-talk you might engage in and give specific examples (e.g., absolutist thinking or catastrophizing might sound like “I can never do anything right and will ultimately be fired from my job”).

Paragraphs Two and Three: Select questions from the Socratic Questioning sheet and client answer these questions in detail.

Style: Not applicable for this assignment.
