Career Analysis

Students are required to draft a 5-page paper describing the steps that should be taken by an individual in order to acquire a specific position within the Criminal Justice Profession today.

The obvious first step would be for the student to identify the position being sought. From there I expect the student to detail in this assignment how a person would go from an adult with absolutely no experience in the field to a fully employed person holding the position being written about.

Topics that should be discussed by the student are the requirements of the position which may include:

● Educational (high school, some college, bachelors or greater)
● Specialized Training (trade schools, military, police academy)
● Age (minimum or maximum)
● Medical (restrictions or special conditions)
● Personal Background (criminal convictions, drug use, etc.)
● Professional (CPA, Law Degree, Private Detective, etc.)
● Other Miscellaneous Specialties (foreign language, etc.)

Students should include a description of how a person would obtain or comply with the above requirements for the position. This would include the specific names and locations of institutions that fulfill the educational or professional requirements described above.
Students will then outline the hiring procedure for the position being described. This should include the process from the initial application through the final job offer.

Students will provide additional position related information including:

● Job Availability
● Average Starting Salary
● Minimum Time in service required for retirement
● Minimum Age of retirement

Finally, the student should conclude with an estimated time frame that it will take to complete the process.

This document is to be a full 5 pages typed double spaced with a title page. All of the instructions for assignments listed in the course syllabus must be followed.

Students must document any outside sources of material quoted in their work.

A note about this assignment

The premise of this assignment is to write a paper that fully describes how a person would pursue a specific career in the Criminal Justice field from start to finish. You could be a student right out of high school or you could be a person who is already working that wants to make a career change.

This assignment works best if you yourself are planning a career in this field and simply write about how you intend to get the job you are looking for. If you are not planning a career in Criminal Justice, then you should pick one and use that position as your topic for this assignment.

This assignment requires the student to develop strategies to achieve their goal of a specific position within the Criminal Justice Profession regardless of the position. If you need a degree or other special training, tell me what it is and where you plan to get it.

Don’t limit yourself by writing about a specific position like Peoria Police Officer. Make it broad like municipal police officer. If you want to specify the size of the city, then say municipal police officer in a city of over 100,000 residents. When you try to apply for a specific police position you restrict your ability to find employment. Perhaps taking the job at a smaller agency would allow you to receive training that will facilitate you being hired at the larger police agency.
