Discuss the argument that the global spread of English has created or perpetuated educational inequalities.

You are required here to write an essay, and given the opportunity to respond to a wide range of material from Block 3 of U214. Your statements should be backed up with evidence, and you should make sure both to reference the sources of any facts, opinions or arguments that you make use of, and to use your own words in expressing your ideas. Any quotations you use must also be referenced.

To address the question, you need to look at both the evidence and counter-evidence that the role of English in education worldwide has perpetuated or created inequalities. Although Units 19 and 20 are clearly relevant to the question, there is much potentially useful material and a number of key concepts in other parts of Block 3 which you can legitimately draw upon in your discussion. You may want to weigh up the evidence on both sides and come to a conclusion as to whether, how or to what extent English is implicated in educational inequalities.

Do remember that you cannot cover everything, and it may be advisable to focus on particular countries to illustrate your answer.
