Create an essay that does the following:

– In your opinion is calling IVC’s team the Arabs a form cultural appropriation? Also, in your opinion, should our team be called the IVC Arabs?

– Create an original introduction that attempts to engage the audience. Make sure the introduction or any paragraphs near provide a clear expectation of the essay’s contents and major claim(s).

– Use at least four sources to help support and/or illustrate your ideas. Some of your sources need to be academic journal articles or books published by academic presses, but you may use other additional sources, such as general-readership magazines, speeches, web pages, etc.

– From the above-mentioned sources, include two that counter or opposes your claim(s). Explain their various points of view in a fair way and then refute them.

– Create a conclusion where you entertain the idea that the name in fact does need to be changed. What would you call IVC’s new team, what would be the mascot, and what are you reasons for these ideas?

Things to consider:

– Create a working definition of what cultural appropriation is, and match that criteria to the use of IVC Arabs.

– Ethical arguments based solely on moral precepts are difficult to defend. If crafting an argument that focuses on principles, also consider consequences, values, and rights.

– Arguments that rely solely on the rights of an individual, such as evoking the first amendment or the freedom of expression, are difficult to defend. You must be able to carefully explain the rights at stake for each group, and argue whose or which of those rights should take precedence and why.

Format:

This paper should be no less than four full pages in length, and no more than six pages. Four sources minimum/seven maximum. All sources/citations must follow MLA guidelines. An annotated bibliography of each source used must be attached (does not count towards final page count) in lieu of a Works Cited page. All papers must be double-spaced, have one-inch margins, 12-point type in a standard font such as Times New Roman or Cambria. Each page should also be numbered in the upper right-hand corner. Include your name, instructor’s name, class and date in the upper left-hand corner preceding the paper’s title.
