Word limit: 450-550 words per each question. Show the number of words for each
question at the end of each answer. If an answer exceeds the word limit, the excess material
will not be marked. Bibliography is not included in the word count.
For this assignment you are required answer the following 3 questions. All 3 questions
must be answered. Each question carries equal marks.
1. Analyse the nature of competition in the UK supermarket industry and identify the
market structure under which the industry operates. Explain the characteristics of this
market structure and discuss how it affects the behaviour, price strategies and profits
of firms in this industry. You are required to apply relevant economic theory and
support your answer with diagrams, real-life examples, facts and figures.
2. How do economists define unemployment? With the help of appropriate diagrams,
explain the causes of “equilibrium” and “disequilibrium” unemployment. Outline the
demand side and supply side policies that a country can use to reduce
unemployment.
3. Discuss the monetary and fiscal policies that have been used in the UK to lessen the
impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the UK economy (make sure
you clearly distinguish between fiscal and monetary policies). Referring to current
figures and future forecasts, outline the current and likely effects of the coronavirus
crises on the economic growth, inflation, employment and national debt.
Each question should be written in an ESSAY style and include introduction, main body and
conclusion. The very first page of your essay should be a title page. The title page should
include the title of your coursework, module code and the title of the module, your name and
student ID, and the date of submission.
The essays should be logically structured. The style of writing should be formal and
impersonal, without grammatical, spelling or typing errors. To answer the 3 questions above,
you will need to apply economic theory and do some research, thus it is important that your
work is properly referenced in the text using Harvard method and you should also provide a
list of references at the end of each essay. You will be penalised for failing to adequately and
correctly reference your work. By submitting your coursework, you confirm that the
assignment is solely your own work. Ensure you avoid inadvertent plagiarism!
