ECN 108 Economic History of Britain and the Modern World 2 Hours

1. Why has inequality between the eastern and western halves of Sheffield
persisted for over a century? What, in your view, could be done to mitigate these
inequalities?
2. Define the concept of the standard of living and explain why trends in the standard
of living can differ from trends in GDP per capita, making specific reference to the
historical experience of one country.
3. Discuss, with examples, whether free trade is always the optimal policy for
countries.
4. Outline the key policies of Roosevelt’s 1930s New Deal in the United States. How
far did these policies achieve their goals?
5. Why did western economies adopt and then abandon Keynesian macroeconomic
policies in the period after the Second World War?
6. Outline the main causes of ONE major 19th or 20th century famine. What policy
lessons would you draw from the famine considered?
7. How have East Asian economies achieved unparalleled growth rates since the
1950s? (You may refer to the specific experience of one or more East Asian
economies.)
