Goals
To analyze the communication patterns of a culture or co-culture. A co-culture is a culture within a culture-a group of persons in a culture who have developed shared rituals, language and/or nonverbal systems.
To have each student analyze how one facet of communication affects the respective co-culture being analyzed (“one” chapter). For example, (using the co-culture of abusive relationships: one student can study how nonverbal communication affects the abuser and the abused while another student can look at how conflict arises and is resolved in this type of relationship).
The challenging part of the individual paper is looking for credible references on the co-culture/your thesis and link it to your assigned chapter. In other words, you want to take the concepts, definitions and relevant theories from your chapter and relate it to the facts that you find on your topic. ALL STUDENTS MUST includes 4-6 credible references in their papers (documentaries, books, articles, databases, etc.-only a few sources can be from the internet). You can use the library database, documentaries, interviews, etc. Half of your research must be scholarly sources (our database or books on the topic). Our textbook is a default source (not one of your 4-6 sources).
EXAMPLE TOPIC: “perception and addiction”: let’s say you found a fact in an article that read: “when somebody is addicted to drugs, they only care about the next time they can get find drugs.” You would include this in your paper and then describe how this shows salience for an addict. Then, you would move onto another fact from a different source to show this same thing.
