Assignment #8 Outlining and Topic Sentences
for the Research Paper
Step 1:
Use your three claims (thesis statements) from step 2 that you came up with in Discussion board #12 on the “Conducting and Work Shopping Research Question” step. These claims will be your three thesis statements. They should be somewhat broad so that you can break them down in your topic sentences and body paragraphs. You can revise them but they need to be three separate arguments that you are making about your topic.
Step 2:
Write down your topic sentences based on your thesis statements. Topic sentences need to be direct and clear. They tell the reader what to expect and what you are arguing in that specific paragraph. Write 3 topic sentence per thesis statement so you end up with 9 topic sentences, which means you would have 9 body paragraphs. Your topic sentences should be in the same order as your thesis statements. Also, your topic sentences should be more specific then your thesis statements. Look at my example below-
My topic is Police Brutality
My three (claims) thesis statements are- 1. the Black community does not trust the police department, 2. Law Enforcement constantly mistreat the Black community and without consequences, and 3. Stereotypes are a main factor as to why police do not trust Black Americans.
Thesis 1- Topic sentence 1- Many Black parents are teaching their kids to not trust police officers which perpetuates a mistrust within the black community.
Thesis 1- Topic Sentence 2- Those in the Black community mistrust police because they fear being brutalized by law enforcement.
Thesis 1- Topic Sentence 3- Black Americans are unable to trust law enforcement because the police department does not invest in being positive influences in these communities.
Thesis 2- Topic Sentence 1- Police officers are abusing their power by physically harming Black Americans.
Thesis 2- Topic Sentence 2- Officers are not being penalized for harming Black Americans.
Thesis 2- Topic Sentence 3- Police officers are often supported by their departments while the Black victims’ families do not have the resources or access to effective attorney’s that will help them defend their loved ones.
Follow the same pattern for thesis 3.
Please follow this format.
Important Note- You do not need 3 topic sentences per claim for your essay 4. You may have a broad thesis where you have a lot to argue and have 4 topic sentences and a thesis that only needs 2 topic sentences. Remember, topic sentences refer to the body paragraphs. This exercise is to help you outline your essay so that you stay organized in writing a longer essay.

Submit both steps as one document to our Canvas page here. As every assignment that is submitted, it should be in MLA format and be submitted as a file.
Objectives:
For assignment 8, students will:
1. Identify or write their three thesis statements
2. Demonstrate they know how to write thesis statements
3. Write three topic sentences per thesis statement
4. Create and follow a clear and organized outline for their research essay

I will give personal feedback on your assignment within two weeks of the submission due date. Your assignment will also be graded at this time.
