Final Personal Literature Project and Proposal
This Final is comprised of two pieces, which will be turned in separately: a Project Proposal and a Personal Literature Project. You will choose one reading from this semester, whose style, genre, content, and structure will serve as a model for you to write your own original piece of Literature. You will plan and pitch your project in a Proposal, before you write it during the Final.
WHAT TO DO
For your Project Proposal (5% of the course grade) and Personal Literature Project (15% of the course grade) you will:
1. Select a reading from this semester with a style and genre that resonates most with you.
2. Determine if this reading’s genre and writing style is the best way to capture your world-view / perspective.
o Remember, these authors all wrote about very specific subjects, in very specific styles, which are embedded with value judgements about their views on life.
3. Draft a Project Proposal, which will pitch why you’ve chosen that reading to serve as a model for your Personal Literature Project. You will also pitch the details about your Personal Literature Project, mapping out exactly what you’ll write about: characters, plot, setting, style, genre, etc. Explain how and why your original piece of Literature will capture your worldview.
o The Project Proposal is due Friday, Week 16, by 11:59PM
4. Write your Personal Literature Project. You will use your Proposal and the reading that you’ve chosen as your guides for writing it. This is due by the end of our course’s Finals day.
o In terms of length, the Literature Project should reflect a minimum of two hours of writing (for short stories, this tends to span anywhere from 4-8 pages).
o Remember, your Personal Literature Project will be an original piece of literature, written by you, in the style of the reading that you’ve chosen.
o I can not accept late submissions of the Personal Literature Project.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
This is a Final, not an in-class writing or free-write. You should be purposeful in the text that you select. Creative writing is also meticulous and careful in its construction. Ensure that you are closely modeling the tone, word-choice, dialogue, plot structure, etc. of the text that you’ve selected. Also be sure that the text you’ve selected is meaningful, that you’ve selected a style that you believe is genuinely necessary to best capture your personal perspective, world-view, and values.
WHAT YOU’RE EVALUATED ON
• The clarity of your Project Proposal
o For example, “I will use ‘Minority Report’ as a model to write about my own views” is not in the least bit clear. Be sure you’re specific and intentional.
• The thoroughness of your idea development
o It should be evident that you’ve invested in planning—this is not a spontaneous free-write.
• How successfully you model the text you’ve chosen to emulate
o In other words, your Personal Literature Project should “sound” like the text you’ve selected, while capturing your own personal perspective, world-view, and values
• The cohesion of what you proposed and your original piece of Literature
o For example, if you follow through on your plan, this would be cohesive. If you write just to fill a page, this would not be considered cohesive.
