Instructions: Select a media object that you think is analytically “rich.” This can be an
advertising image, a photograph, a movie, a video that you come across. Drawing on
material from Part II of this course (“On How to Analyze Media Objects”), conduct an
analysis of your media object to showcase how meaning is embedded in it, or on how it
raises some visibility issues and/or concerns. If you choose to analyze how meaning is
embedded in your media object, you should focus not only on what the image means,
but how it conveys meaning through the coding of visual information and the reliance on
general cultural and linguistic signs. If you choose to analyze how your media object
raises some visibility issues and/or concerns, you need to clearly explain how, and what
are these issues and/or concerns. Use evidence from the media object itself to support
all interpretive claims. Make reference to relevant readings from Part II throughout your
analysis.
Resources: Other than your image selection, you do not need to conduct any external
research for this assignment. The Purdue Online Writing Lab provides an excellent
overview of various referencing style guides, including APA. Include page numbers for
all quotes, paraphrasing, and specific author ideas that you borrow.
Format: Include your media object with your reflection paper, which should be of
approx. 2 pages double-spaced.
