Introduction:
For this assignment, you will work on a topic found in The Rise. This is a chance for you to learn more about something you were curious about while reading Sarah Lewis’ engaging and information-filled text. You will research the topic, compile the information, and prepare a research paper on a topic relevant to The Rise. Once you have decided on your topic, you should draft a research question that will provide a clear focus for both your research itself and the report that you will write. Having formulated your research question, you should determine where to look for appropriate information that will help you answer your question and give you greater insight into Sarah Lewis’ The Rise.

The goal of this essay is for you to use your critical thinking, writing, research, and reading skills to establish your own thesis and support it with logical evidence, analysis, and support. This will require that you choose strong specific quotes and examples from the text and your outside resources and explain your connections to readers.
Assignment:
For this assignment, you will incorporate the skills you have developed throughout this course, and you will develop new skills in research.

• Generate your topic and research question.
• Make an argument about your topic. How is this topic relevant to your understanding of The Rise? How does the topic inform your understanding of the purpose of Lewis’ book? Create a working thesis statement that includes this argument.
• Research sources appropriate to your topic, and effectively use those sources as evidence to support and prove your thesis. You must use at least three outside sources as well as The Rise to support your ideas.
• Cite these sources using MLA format. Integrate your sources effectively, include proper parenthetical citations, and close with a Works Cited page.

Requirements:
• An informative title.
• An introduction that provides relevant context for your research and introduces its purpose.
• A series of paragraphs that present a synthesis of the information you’ve found or otherwise produced in your research, analyzed in a way that emphasizes its meaning or significance.
• At least 3 reputable and reliable outside sources.
• A conclusion that summarizes your key findings and judgments about the information included in the report that points to its relevance in your reading and understanding of The Rise.
• A Works Cited page in MLA 8 format.
• Correct sentence structure and punctuation.

Your research paper must be 5-7 pages, typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font, and in MLA format.

Tips and Reminders:

• Show that you have carefully read The Rise.
• Develop a thesis and support it with evidence in language that is clear and persuasive.
• Be sure to back up your ideas with specific information supported with details from Lewis’ text and the 3 credible resources you find. In other words, support what you are saying with paraphrases, summaries, and quotes. Include at least 2 quotes in your essay.
Your sources must be reputable and reliable. Good sources include the following:
 newspapers (San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, for example)
 magazines (Time, Newsweek, for example)
 books
 scholarly journals
 some websites
Remember that a well-researched paper will include a variety of sources. Also remember that for academic papers, books and scholarly journals tend to provide the best information.
• Integrate the source material skillfully. Introduce it with signal phrases. Decide to paraphrase, summarize, or quote. Use the proper in-text citation and use your critical voice after to explain how the source material connects to your point.
• Utilize the services available to you in the TLC.
• Use the They Say/ I Say text, our digital resources, and/or Purdue OWL (online writing lab) as a resource for preparing academic writing. Thesis development, strategies, style and grammar tips, and MLA citation are some of the sections you might find helpful.
• Writing is a labor-intensive process. There is value in struggling to develop and enhance your ideas in writing.

Steps in the process:

This class values the writing process of invention, drafting, revision, editing, and reflection.

• Begin by reading and rereading your annotations in your copy of The Rise and complete an Exploration Journal to find a relevant topic of interest to you.
• Read and refer to the Canvas module “English 101 Hauss Research Paper” which is a digital Library Workshop on research.
• Do the Invention exercise; conduct the research to the best of your ability.
• Begin the drafting process early and proofread and edit your work before turning it in.
• Receive feedback from a TLC peer.
