Social and Critical ThinkingResearch paper in order to successfully pass this course, you will be required to complete a research paper and you have the liberty of choosing a topic that is of interest to you, in the arena of any of the following disciplines: sociology, psychology, anthropology, criminology, education, economics, politics, art, or biology. Some examples of research topics could include: stem cell research, eating disorders, childhood obesity, cosmetic surgery, steroid use, mental illness, etc. There are a variety of issues to choose from and because you will work with this topic throughout the duration of this semester please choose the one you find intriguing. Second, you will be required to research and examine academic and scholarly sources pertaining to your chosen issue. In order to properly complete this paper, you are to collect between 6 to 8 relevant scholarly/academic sources, such as published journal articles or books. If you are not sure what constitutes a scholarly source please e-mail me, set up an appointment with me, or visit the library for research assistance. Next, the overall purpose of this paper is for you to carry out research regarding any topic you like and connecting your topic to concepts, terms, and course material from our Chaffee course textbook. In addition, I would like you to critically analyze and discuss the various scholarly works you find. Finally, after you have gathered your sources, throughout your research paper I would like you to address the following questions:1.)What is your topic of interest, why did you choose it, and what do scholars tend to discuss when it comes to your chosen issue? In other words, describe at least three main themes or areas of concern that scholars tend to address in relation to your topic. Explain what seems to be scholars’ general perceptions and/or beliefs regarding your chosen issue? 2.)After reading through your sources, do scholars seem to rely on beliefs or knowledge, and why? Do these academic researchers supply evidence and fact
2from reliable sources? Please state why or why not and give specific examples from your sources as related to our course textbook.3.)Also, do scholars use emotive, euphemisms, or other forms of language expression to communicate and explain their viewpoints to the reader? If so, which types? Again, give specific examples from your research as related to our course textbook. 4.)Finally, after reading these academic sources what can you now say you have learned about your topic of interest? Do you have suggestions for further research or areas of improvement regarding your chosen topic? Research Paper Requirements:•Collect between 6 to 8 relevant scholarly sources (You MUST use our course textbook).•Be sure to use course material and concepts to support your analysis. Utilize examples.•You may write your paper in either APA, MLA, or ASA format and include a title page and a reference page. This paper should be 5-6 full pages in length (Not including a title page or reference page) and your papers need to be double-spaced, aligned left, typed in a 12pt. font (such as Times New Roman or Arial).•Do not wait until the last minute to ask for help. GRADING RUBRIC: Final Research Paper1)Your research topic is clearly defined and writing is clear, concise, with limited grammatical errors, and written in proper MLA, APA, or ASA format. Your paper also includes a title page and reference page, with page numbers. It is a complete 5-6 pages in length (not including a title or reference page). (5points possible)
