Summary
The main purpose of this INDIVIDUAL assignment is to get you to think about all the factors that can lead a construction project to systematic failure on either budget, schedule. A successful project, in theory, is one that is completed on time and within budget where the client is happy with the finished product and the contractor makes a profit. When a project fails, it’s due to some kind of conflict or issues that add time and costs to the bottom line.
When these issues are not spotted early enough, they can have a domino effect that destroys the budget and the schedule and can lead to catastrophic failure. This in turn can have a detrimental effect on other projects whose success depends on the success of earlier projects.
So, what causes some projects to fail and others to succeed?
Instructions
Your task is to find a single construction project that is worth at least $10 million before construction activities began and report on the following:
• Project overview – what the project was supposed to accomplish / what it should have looked like when finished / schedule / cost / location / etc.
• High level management and chains of command organization between stakeholders (don’t go to crazy here, just main players and their roles)
• What led to failure (single or multiple issues / chain reaction / etc)
• Report on scope, schedule, cost, communications, performance and stakeholder issues
• Strengths and weaknesses about the project (what was good about it, even if it failed; what was bad…)
• Your overall assessment of what happened and how it could have been prevented (this is where I want you to think for yourself!!!). Don’t just tell me something I could read on an article….. tell me why your solution would have worked.
• Choose a project in North America if at all possible. I chose Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion.
