This should express the main area of investigation, implying its questions and potential argument or
standpoint. While being a working title, which may change over time, it is important that the title is as
specific and precise as possible. The title should be brief, and reflect the main question or issue of the
proposed research. Unnecessary over-long or technical words should be avoided.
Research topic
In this section, briefly define the subject and the main concerns of the investigation. After defining your
subject, you may find it helpful to think about the main concerns of the research as questions you are
asking yourself to which you hope to find the answer.
Given that a key expectation of doctoral study, reflected in the examinable criteria, is that the study
contributes to its field, some time should be spent defining the field. This may include some historical
background but, ultimately, should be about the field as it stands in a contemporary context. It should also
make a proposal of what your study will contribute to it.
It is worth thinking hard about this section, as it will form the basis of study for the next few years (though
it will inevitably evolve as you make progress). If your proposal includes creative components, you should
consider that your context includes creative practitioners, not just writers or theorists.
Research Design
We need to know how you intend to undertake your study. For example, is it a theoretical study that
cumulates in a single final exhibition, or is it to be a self-reflexive process in which artwork production
contributes to the direction of the research as a whole? There are also other approaches. In this section,
you must give an indication of how you intend to approach all aspects of the study, theoretical and
creative.
Scope of creative outcomes
Please indicate if you are intending to hold an exhibition at the time of examination, and if you intend to
submit a bound book containing images.
Required resources
Include a description of the essential equipment or resources necessary to complete the research. In the
case of Fine Arts, this includes if you require studio space.
This is a practice-led research project which consists of two components: a creative output and a text component. The two components are not independent,
but interact and work together to address the research question.
