Assignment – Discipline
1. In the Goulart article, the author discusses two goals of discipline as it relates to safety.
a. What do you see as a challenge (problem) with each of these goals?
b. What do you see as an advantage with each of these goals?
2. In the Goulart article, the author poses that discipline and punishment are two distinct issues.
a. If you agree with the author, defend your position. If you do not agree with the author state your case.
b. Should fault be included as part of the disciplinary process?
3. Goulart cites the FAA ASAP program as a goal for other organizations to strive to implement. In the ASAP program, pilots (and others) are able to self-report incidents, close calls and other events (read violations) without consequences. There is much more to this program, but in general do you think such a program should be implemented in other industries? Why or why not.
4. In the Perkinson article, the author strongly suggest that discipline should not be associated with an organization’s Behavioral Observation Process (BBS). Some of you may be familiar with the aviation program LOSA, where flight crews are observed by a 3rd party. A BBS program is similar for organizations outside of aviation. If you were a participant in a BBS observation session and the individual you (as a supervisor) were observing violated a safety rule/practice, do you think that person should be disciplined? Defend your answer.
5. In the Perkinson article, he addresses the role of consequences. After reading that section of the paper, describe and give an example of each of the 4 types of consequences from your life.
