Identify three people who have been or are particularly important to you. For each person, identify one self-perception you have that reflects the appraisal of you communicated by that person.
Additionally, recall identity scripts your parents communicated about who you were or were supposed to become. Can you hear them saying, “Our family doesn’t…” or “We are the type of people who…”? Can you recall a message that told you what and who you were expected to be? Which of these still makes sense to you today? Which ones no longer serve you or are irrelevant or at odds with your personal values and goals? How can you re-write those identity scripts now that you are an adult?
