Topic: Possible solutions to Environmental Problems
Objectives:
1. Describe commonly proposed solutions to environmental problems, analyze their arguments
2. Provide a critical assessment of these solutions, draw insights from environmental sociology
3. Propose your own solution, provide justifications, assess strength and weakness
Overall approaches (choose one):
1. Focus on one specific environmental problem, say climate change, or a range of connected problems, such as issues associated with food production.
2. Choose a specific area, your hometown, or the USA.
Essay Structure, four parts:
(1) Describe the reasons of choosing the problem/area, the general background information regarding the problem/area.
(2) Summarize commonly proposed solutions (e.g. recycling, switching to renewable energy, etc.), demonstrate the underlying logic/argument of these solutions. Be brief.
(3) Critically assess these solutions. Then design your own solution. This is the main body of your essay, a place to demonstrate your understanding of the course material.
(4) Conclusion and self-assessment
General writing requirements:
1. No more than 5 pages, 12 font size, double space, 1 inch margin all around, no paper decoration, double-spaced.
2. Name your file as “your last name final.docx”.
3. Academic writing style (see “The Elements and Structure of An Academic Writing” file)
