Data and Design

Objectives
• To formulate a specific document for programming
• To create historical visualization studies that provide context and coherence
• To understand and apply design theories as a tool for guiding design strategy
• To develop the ability to employ basic methods of data collection and analysis to inform all
aspects of programming and design process
Description
Students will demonstrate their skills and familiarize themselves with essential tools in
gathering information and setting an inquiring approach to design. Students will gather specific
information regarding site, potential clients, and prevalent lifestyles associated with their loft
design through various data collection methods.
Required Materials
Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Office Suite – PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.
Instructions
Part One: Group Schedule and Deliverables
• All students will formulate their design groups for this project; every assignment will be
completed within this group. Optimal group size is 3 students.
• Create a team name and determine preferred times and methods for meeting.
• Each group should be communicating regularly, whether it is in person, through email,
Zoom, Skype, or a combination.
• Develop a chart/schedule of due dates and agreed-upon timelines in Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, etc.
• Determine weekly “soft” deadline for internal submissions within the group.
• Students in the same group can earn different grades on assignments based on their
contributions.
Part Two: Design Programming Poster
Create a 24”x 36” digital poster that includes this analysis:
• Assess each of the twelve programming categories outlined in Table 1.2 (Nussbaumer text)
through both fact finding and literature research. See Handout with Table 1.2
• Consider each of the 12 categories in terms of facts, goals, and design criteria.
• Review project information such as the client questionnaire and basic site & building
information.

• Synthesize and analyze data, then place findings graphically within your poster in a
combination of table/chart, text, diagrams, images, and graphics.
• Develop the three distinct user profiles within the poster including: the main loft owner,
the transient tenant for the accessible rental apartment, and the transient tenant for the
second rental apartment
• Investigate the programming categories based on these different users.
• Conduct an extensive visual search for buildings that relate to the project’s context on
exterior and interior typologies of NY buildings of the 1920s.
• Collect images of interior and exterior typologies that are divided into distinct architectural
building styles, i.e., Art Deco, Industrial, etc.
• You can mix and match elements as long as the final result is unified.
• Evaluate the unique elements that you intend to formally integrate in the plan, thinking
about specific measurements and historic architectural element features of NY building
within the 1920s such as floor details, stair details, window types, window sill, column
design, wall structures, ceiling details, architectural trims, etc.
• Annotate images with the appropriate name of architectural elements
• Cite all images using APA format.
Part Three: Case Study Research
Conduct research for a minimum of three case studies, in order to address each of the three
user profiles/occupancy types (the client residence with office or studio, fully accessible
residence for rental, and a residence for rental).
• These could be one for each occupancy type, or a combination of occupancies.
• Summarize and synthesize your findings for each case study.
• Describe what you learned from this exercise, and how it can be applied to your design.
• Use a combination of text, images, and visual diagrams to articulate your process.
• Cite all information and images using APA format.

Evaluation
Assignment 1: Research and Case Study will be marked in its entirety out of 100. The following
rubric indicates the criteria students are to adhere to, and their relative weights to the
assignment overall.
