Polymers

Epoxy polymers are widely used for structural applications. One challenge is the brittle nature of the material and there are many approaches to enhancing the toughness. Two such approaches are the addition of graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) and the addition of carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile (CTBN) rubber. However, both of these approaches have been documented to have impacts on other mechanical properties as well.

The following data (extension and load) was generated in a series of tensile experiments. All samples failed during testing. The following sample configuration and dimensions were used in the test:

Using this tensile data, answer the following questions by developing a MATLAB m-file. Include detailed comments in your m-file that say what each line of code is doing. Submit a single pdf file using the MATLAB ‘publish’ function for questions 1 to 3 on Canvas. Question 4 may be submitted as a separate pdf file.

Question 1 (2 pts)

Calculate the stress and strain for all three sample sets. Plot all three stress-strain curves on the same plot, making sure the different curves can be distinguished from each other. Include axis labels with units, a legend and grid lines.

Question 2 (2 pts)

Choose an appropriate range of data to calculate the Young’s modulus of each sample. Report these values in a table with appropriate headers for both columns and rows. Make sure to include units. You may combine the output for questions 2 & 3 in the same table.

Question 3 (2 pts)

Calculate the toughness of the three materials from the provided data. Report these values in a table with appropriate headers for both columns and rows. Make sure to include units. What do you conclude about the toughness of the different materials relative to one another?

Question 4 (0.5 pts)

KTM asks you to recommend one of the three materials for the handlebars of their new all-terrain vehicle. Which one of these three materials would you choose and why? Is there other material data you would need to determine increase your confidence in your decision?

Extra Credit (0.5pts)

For the given data sets, which numerical integration method would you use, if you had to do the integration by hand? Justify your choice.
