Overview of Assignment

In Social Work research we use qualitative data and analysis methods to provide a deeper understanding of the behavior, experiences, and functioning of humans. These methods include collecting, reviewing, and coding responses to open-ended questions. In this exercise, you and your research team, will practice these methods.

The assignment’s objective is for to successfully conduct a qualitative data analysis report.

Part 1 – Individual Review & Report
Just as a research in the field would, you will receive responses from a survey. You need to read through them and define categories for them.

Part 2 – Team Review & Report

Then you will share your results and address the research questions in part 2 together.

 
Part 1 – Individual Review
On the next page you will find the survey responses from 120 teachers who were asked the question, “What major factors led you into teaching?”.

Your task is to read over the responses (in Table 2) and determine the factors that seem to predominate and that can be put or coded into categories.
• What main reasons did the teachers give to how they were led to teaching?
• Determine the factors that seem to predominate. Look closely at related wordings from several responses.
Steps

a) Create 5 category names that summarize the main responses.
b) Write the category number for each response in the 2nd column of Table 2. Note: Sometimes respondents will mention more than one factor. You will need to decide how to handle that.
c) Next, count the number of responses in each category
d) and calculate the percent. Type the number and percentage in Table 1.
