Research Proposal Exercise
1. Introduction
The introduction should set the scene for the research. It will include some contextual background concerning the area/concepts to be researched. It may also touch on personal motivation for undertaking research in this area.
Task: Provide contextual background for the research study.
2. Aim of Study
The aim of the study encapsulated in one or two sentences.
Task: In one or two sentences state the aim of the study.
3. Objectives
Individual objectives provide more detail as to how the overall aim of the study will be achieved and will also begin to indicate the methodology and research tools to be used.
Task: State clearly the different strands of research that will combine to achieve the overall aim of the project. These objectives should begin to indicate the range of methodology being employed.
4. Literature Review
This section will act as introduction to the literature review in the actual dissertation. It should identify key texts relevant to the research subject and introduce key themes and concepts.
Task: Identify texts and sources relevant to the research project that you are already aware of and themes and concepts which emerge from these key texts.
5. Design, Data Collection Instruments and Analysis
This section will begin to detail the actual methodology of how the research project will be carried out and how the analysis of gathered data will be conducted. Reference will be made to research literature which will underpin and reference the methodology and analysis. This section provides the beginning of the methodology chapter in the actual dissertation.
Task: Begin to detail the research methodology and analysis techniques that will be used in the research project. If possible, begin to identify key texts and literature that provide a basis for the chosen methodology.
6. Ethical Considerations
This section will involve consideration and discussion around issues such as confidentiality, informed consent and access.
Task: Identify ethical issues related to your research project and how these will be managed and resolved.
7. References
List of texts and sources identified and considered to date.
Task: Collate and update sources engaged with to date.
