CHRP DEP Unit Assessment
Unit Type: Core Credit Value: 4 credits
Assessment Code: CHRP-DEP Assignment Expiry: September 2017
Background to Unit – Developing yourself as an Effective HR or L&D Practitioner
This unit is about you as an individual identifying where you are currently in terms of your knowledge, skills and behaviour against the CIPD’s Profession Map – a valuable framework for identifying what organisations require from HR and L&D practitioners in today’s workplace. Therefore, the focus of the assessment is very much developmental and personal and you will get a chance to return to the assessment (Question 3 below) at the end of the programme to review how far you have developed during the course of the programme.
In order to complete the assessment using the CIPD’s ‘My CPD Map’ online assessment tool, you will need to be a member and therefore, your application prior to starting the programme needs to have been completed, submitted and approved by the CIPD. You will need a CIPD username and password to access ‘My CPD Map’.
The learning outcomes for this unit are that you will be able to:
1. Understand the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be an effective HR or L&D practitioner;
2. Know how to deliver timely and effective HR services to meet users’ needs;
3. Be able to reflect on own practice and development needs and maintain a plan for personal development.

Your task
Part 1 (AC 1.1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4) (500 Words)
• Produce and submit a development plan* (no maximum word count).
o A template can be found on the Moodle and this initial plan should focus on the next 6 – 12 months and have 4-5 SMART objectives
o This will be a working document throughout the programme, which will be explained as you go through the programme
• Produce 500 words of reflective commentary in Word format about yourself to include:
o An explanation of the concept and importance of CPD for you as an HR practitioner
o Using the CIPD Profession Map, explain what knowledge, skills and behaviours are required to be an effective HR practitioner for the three professional areas you covered in your self-assessment (Insight, Strategy and Solutions, Leading HR and one of your own choice)
o Identify three key development needs from your plan and evaluate options available to meet those needs
In order for you to be able to complete part 1 you will start the process by taking an initial self-assessment using the CIPD profession map. (CPD Map)
Log onto http://www2.cipd.co.uk/cipd-hr-profession/cipd-hr-profession-map/default.html
You will need to read around the concept of the CIPD Profession Map to ensure you fully understand the idea of the professional areas, the behaviours and the bands (the concept will have been covered in overview in your Introductory Workshop). You should be clear on the difference between ‘knowledge’, ‘skills’ and ‘behaviour’;
1. Click the link for ‘My CPD Map’ (you will need to have logged in using your CIPD username and password);
2. Firstly, undertake an assessment for yourself in the professional areas in relation to your own current role (or if you are not in HR, an HR role you aspire to) for Knowledge and Activities.
• Each professional area assessment takes 5-10 minutes to complete. You do not need to complete all three in one sitting. The system will ‘bookmark’ where you leave an assessment to allow you to return to where you stopped the assessment):
• Insights, Strategies and Solutions
• Leading HR
• One other of your choice (we recommend you choose an area that you are less familiar with but predict may become a significant part of your HR career or role in future).
3. Secondly, undertake an assessment against the behavioural areas for yourself in relation to your own current role (or if you are not in HR, an HR role you aspire to) against a minimum of three behaviours (each behaviour assessment takes 5 minutes to complete. You do not need to complete all of the assessments in one sitting. The system will ‘bookmark’ where you leave an assessment to allow you to return to where you stopped the assessment);
You do not need to print off the full report for the purposes of this assessment, but it is a robust document you can use to plan your HR career. In relation to this specific assignment you must attach a copy of the HR summary reports with your assignment submission. There is guidance on the Moodle that will support you to do this.
Part 2 (AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3) (1000 Words)
Produce a Word document in relation to your organisation (or one with which you are familiar) evaluating the role of HR in helping your organisation achieve its business strategy and the degree to which it does so currently.
Within your evaluation, you must cover the following aspects:
• Identify three key internal customers of HR and their respective ‘needs’ (at least two per customer) in terms of what they require from HR.
• Explain how conflicting needs and priorities are identified and managed effectively
• Identify three different methods of communication and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each, when dealing with internal customers;
• Linking to the above concepts, explain how effective HR service delivery is maintained in your organisation, including how the function:
o delivers its service(s) on time and within budget;
o manages ‘difficult’ customers;
o how effectively ‘complaints’ from internal customers are dealt with
Throughout the assessment, you should refer to best practice, and include reference to appropriate literature sources to demonstrate your wider reading. Demonstrating evidence of wider reading through appropriate referencing will improve your answer and increase the likelihood of your work achieving a ‘Pass’.
